Beer Battered Calamari Sandwich

BEER BATTERED CALAMARI SANDWICH

Recipe By Seafood Crate

Inspired by Spanish street food, this beer battered calamari sandwich offers up a tasty twist on a seafood staple… Made from the comforts of home!

INGREDIENTS

Beer Battered Calamari Ingredients

  • fresh squid bodies (approx. 14 oz) rinsed and cut into rings
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup cold beer
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying

Lemon and Garlic Sauce Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic; crushed and chopped
  • 1tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 4 Ciabatta Buns
  • Lettuce
  • Sliced Tomatoes

DIRECTIONS 

  1. Add calamari to a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Place in the fridge.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, olive oil, salt and pepper, cayenne pepper and garlic powder.
  3. Slowly pour in the beer, and mix together until smooth. Place in the fridge for thirty minutes.
  4. Add mayonnaise, yogurt, salt, pepper, garlic and lemon juice into a bowl. Mix well. Refrigerate.
  5. Heat approximately 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep fryer or saucepan to 375F.
  6. Remove the squid and beer batter from the refrigerator.
  7. Add the remaining 1 cup of flour onto a plate.
  8. Dip each squid ring into the flour, shake off any excess and drench in beer batter.
  9. Fry the squid in the hot oil for about two minutes, or until you reach a deep golden brown.
  10. Drain on paper towels.
  11. Meanwhile add lettuce and sliced tomatoes onto your ciabatta buns. Top with beer battered calamari and drizzle with the lemon and garlic sauce.
