Click “Get Started.” Complete the crate selection process and go through checkout. Don’t worry, you won’t be charged immediately! Your crate order will appear as an active crate in your My Account section.

Go to My Account and check if the crate you just added is there and active. Then find the crate you don’t want to receive and click “Pause.”

On Thursday morning your credit card will be charged for only your active crates.

What if I don’t want anything for the coming week? Or if I’m going on a vacation?

If you don’t want anything delivered on the upcoming Tuesday, you can pause your crate any time before 11:59pm on Wednesday.

Just go to My Account and click “Pause” on the crate you want paused.

When you want to resume, go to My Account and click “Reactivate.”

Our flexible subscription service allows you to choose weekly, biweekly, or monthly delivery frequencies. You can try us out and order just once as well!

When does my credit card get charged?

The order cut-off is Wednesday 11:59pm and your credit card is charged every Thursday for crates to be delivered the next Tuesday. If there is a payment issue, you will receive a notification email and we will not be able to send your crate for that week. We are not able to ship crates if payment has not been successfully processed.

SHIPPING

Do you ship to homes and offices?

Yes, we do ship to homes and businesses. We prefer that someone personally receive the delivery. Send crates to wherever you’d like as long as it’s within our delivery area.

What locations do you ship to?

We currently ship within southern Ontario, but we plan on expanding to all of Ontario and Quebec soon. All we need is your love and support!

What are the shipping charges?

Shipping charges as well as taxes are included in all of our prices! So there aren’t any surprises when you get to checkout. This is part of why we are Honestly Fresh.

When can I order? How long will it take you to deliver to my home?

You can order at any time. Our order deadline is Wednesday at midnight and we ship our crates the week after. Let’s say you ordered the afternoon of Wednesday April 3rd. You’d get your crate on Tuesday April 9th.

Here’s how it would work on our side: On the morning of Thursday April 4th, we would compile the orders from our customers and place orders with our suppliers. We’d get the fresh seafood from our suppliers the morning of Monday April 8th. We’d process the seafood and ship it out the same day. It would arrive the next day on Tuesday April 9th or earlier.

Shipping usually takes a day. We’re working on same-day delivery within the GTA.

ABOUT SEAFOOD CRATE

Why Crate? Why not a Box?

Fish and seafood were traditionally stored and shipped using wooden crates until the extensive use of plastics changed things. Wooden crates have a nostalgic and traditional feel to them. The founders of Seafood Crate grew up watching seafood being transported in wooden crates. We pay homage to that in our crate’s design. We call it a crate instead of a box because, for us, it is something more special than just a box of seafood.

How do we source our products?

Inter-Canada Fisheries is a Canadian industry powerhouse that has been importing seafood from all over the world since 1980. They specialize in sourcing the freshest and highest quality seafood from around the world. We share their warehouse and have access to all the fresh seafood coming in directly from the docks. We ship out your crates within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the seafood in our warehouse.

Why only 12 crates with specific combinations?

Having to eat the same seafood twice or thrice a week can get boring. So we did a lot of research and experimentation to come up with unique combinations of different seafood. Our curated crates make it simple and easy to have variety in your week’s menu and to stay healthy at the same time. Each crate is tied to a theme and includes products that match the theme. Fun isn’t it? 😊

You can also build your own custom crate with whatever seafood we offer!

Why are Seafood Crate’s products the freshest option in the market?

When we say “from the waters to your door,” we mean it! Here’s how you get seafood from Seafood Crate:

Caught in the sea -> Processed, packed, and shipped to wholesaler (like Inter-Canada Fisheries) -> Vacuum-packed and shipped to your door.

Compare that to how you get seafood at a grocery store or fish market:

Caught in the sea -> Processed, packed, and shipped to wholesaler -> Shipped to store -> Cut/reprocessed, repackaged, and placed on the shelf -> Sits on the shelf -> You go and buy it.

There are two key reasons why Seafood Crate is the freshest option. 1.) All the time that is required to send the seafood to the retailer and the time it sits on the shelf is eliminated. 2.) Vacuum-packing our seafood locks in the freshness. In a grocery store or fish market, fish is cut and sits out oxidizing for who knows how long. Oxidization is what causes loss of freshness, taste, and nutritional value.

Our subscription model enables us to order the exact amount of seafood we need. We receive our seafood direct from our suppliers on Monday. We process it and immediately vacuum-pack it. Then we ship it to you in an insulated box with ice packs that keep your seafood cool and fresh.

If you can think of any other way to get the freshest possible seafood, please let us know and we will be happy to implement it!

OUR CRATES

Why the specific portion size?

We want to make seafood a part of your day to day life without burdening you with the heavy thinking that goes behind what to buy, how much to buy and how frequently to buy. Health Canada recommends you eat seafood at least twice a week. The 7 oz/200 g portion size we offer takes care of your weekly nutritional requirements that need to come from seafood. We offer crates in three different sizes – Single, Couple, and Family. The Single Crate is good for someone who eats seafood every now and then. A Couple’s Crate is good for two people for a week or one person who eats seafood often.  The Family Crate is good for three people for the whole week or for one very enthusiastic seafood lover!

Do the crate prices vary frequently due to seasonality or other reasons?

We have taken seasonality, supply fluctuations, and other such factors into consideration when pricing our crates. So any price increases we experience do not get passed down to you. However, if prices areadjusted, the adjustments will be done on a half yearly or yearly basis and will account for any long term changes.

How is the seafood packed? How does it arrive fresh?

Our recyclable crates have been designed to keep your seafood cool and fresh for 48 hours depending on external temperatures. The crates are lined with special insulation and contain ice gel packs. This helps protect your seafood from external heat and keeps it fresh by maintaining the required temperature. Your seafood is artisanally cut into portions and comes to you sealed in vacuum packs. The vacuum packs seal in the freshness. The crates, the insulation, and the ice gel packs are reusable and recyclable. Your seafood arrives as fresh as it was when we got it!

Are any of your products sushi or sashimi-grade?

Planning a sushi party? Our tuna is sushi / sashimi-grade. Yum!

HANDLING OUR SEAFOOD

How do I store the seafood when I receive it?

This is a very important question!

If you plan to cook and eat your seafood within soon after receiving it, refrigerate it in its vacuum pack. It’ll stay fresh and delicious for at least 7 days!

If you don’t plan on consuming your seafood soon after receiving it, simply place it in the freezer (not fridge) in its original vacuum bag. When you want to cook your frozen seafood, take it out of the freezer and place it in the fridge to thaw for 24 hours. If it is not completely thawed out after 24 hours you can thaw it in cold water. Thawing your seafood in this way maintains its nutritional value and taste.

Sushi and sashimi-grade products must be completely frozen before consumption. This kills all the microbes. These microbes are generally eliminated by cooking, but as sushi and sashimi are not cooked, it is important to freeze them beforehand.

What if I’m not home to receive my crate? Will the courier service take it back? How can I claim it back?

  1. Since it is a perishable commodity, we take utmost care to ensure that it gets you quickly. We have designed our crates so that your seafood remains fresh inside for 48 hours after being shipped. We prefer you receive your crate personally and not let it sit outside your front door or porch alone and lonely. For “signature upon delivery” someone must be present to receive the crate or they will need to pick it up from the nearest post office later.
  2. Once you receive your seafood it is important that you place it in the refrigerator or freezer as per the handling instructions included in your crate.
  3. We try our best to deliver your crate in a safe place if there is no one there to receive it. But there may be instances when the delivery person cannot find a suitable place to leave it. If this happens, they will leave a delivery notification card and you can pick your crate up at your nearest post office. Please be there to personally receive your crate to ensure it doesn’t get left outside for an extended period of time.
  4. We will not be able to process refunds in cases of unclaimed and returned crates as the seafood will have spoiled by the time we get it back.

How do we know if it’s fresh? What if the product I received is not fresh?

If you are a foodie or a seafood aficionado or connoisseur, you can tell its freshness by the look and feel of it. Compare your seafood to that from a grocery store. The colour, texture, and smell can all play a part in determining freshness. All it takes is one bite of our seafood to know that when we say “shore to door” freshness, we mean it!

How long will my seafood keep after I receive it?

If it’s kept refrigerated in the sealed vacuum pack, it’ll stay fresh and tasty for 7 days. If you are freezing your seafood for later use, it can be safely consumed much later after you receive it.

What’s the best way to thaw frozen seafood?

If you want your seafood to be as nutritious and delicious as possible, you should put it in your fridge to thaw for 24 hours. If it is not completely thawed out after 24 hours you can thaw it in cold water.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Are you donating to any charities?

$1 from the sale of every crate goes towards funding the “Ocean Cleanup Project” https://www.theoceancleanup.com/ This is our way of giving back to the oceans and contributing to a better world. The oceans directly and indirectly feed humankind and this is our way of helping to protect and sustain them.

Why does industry knowledge matter?

The oceans cover about 70% of the earth’s surface and are home to millions of species. 33000 of these species can be categorized as seafood—way more choices than you have when you go shopping! So it is very important to understand what seafood product is best depending on your eating habits, your location, your lifestyle, and most importantly, the freshest seafood product that can be made available to you. Only an industry expert who understands both sides of the supply and demand cycle can make this possible. We are backed by Inter-Canada Fisheries—a pioneer of sourcing seafood from all over the world and bringing it to Canadian markets.

How will I know if a fish has a certain feature? I care about my seafood being wild caught and high in omega acids, for example.

Badges such as “Wild Caught” and “Omega-3” are proudly displayed for each of our crates and products. We also display detailed nutrition facts tables for each and every one of our products.

Where do I find recipes?

What do the ASC and MSC abbreviations mean?

Our sustainably farmed seafood is labelled ASC certified. ASC stands for the Aquaculture Stewardship Council. The ASC is an independent, international non-profit organisation that manages the world’s leading certification and labeling program for responsible aquaculture.

MSC stands for the Marine Stewardship Council which certifies sustainable wild fish products. MSC is an international non-profit organisation that recognizes and rewards companies who make efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future.
